A couple of times during the diary, dresses are mentioned. Below is a ‘fashion plate’ of dresses from the 1830s when the family were travelling in Europe.
Whilst this is ‘high’ fashion, the girls might have worn nipped in waists, at around where their real waists were, (unlike the higher waists of the 1810s), with wide shoulders with large sleeves. As the decade progressed, skirts got larger.
Low square-toed slippers were made of fabric or leather for during the day and maybe satin for the evenings.
