The Sauls of Preston, England
This group of pictures relating to the SAUL family have kindly been donated by Trevor SAUL.

Briefly, the photos below comprise the following
family members. Frank and Harold SAUL in the mid 1930's, as
members of the Penwortham Cricket Club. Frank and Thomas Pemberton SAUL in
1915 Harold Bannister SAUL and his
sister Gladys Frank and Thomas Pemberton SAUL of
23 Spa Road, Preston, Lancashire, England were the sons of Robert & Mary Jane SAUL.
The photograph below shows them in 1915 as proud recruits to The King's (Liverpool
Regiment). Thomas died of wounds received
at the Battle of the Somme in 1916. His Record of Commemoration states: In Memory of
THOMAS PEMBERTON SAUL, Private 22247, 20th Battalion, The King's (Liverpool Regiment), who
died on Wednesday, 9th August 1916, Age 27, of wounds received at the Battle of the Somme
on 31st July. Son of Robert and Mary J SAUL, of 14 Spa Road, Preston,; husband of Amy
SAUL, of 50 Grafton Street, Preston. Frank subsequently became the
chief clerk to the Lancashire Architects department c1948. Harold also served in the
King's (Liverpool Regiment), 19th Battalion, Pte 30285. An Appreciation of Good Services
stated the following: For conspicuous gallantry in action when, as company runner, he
carried messages from his company commander to and from his platoons and Advanced
Battalions HQ during the whole operations across the open under heavy shell and machine
gun fire on April 9th 1917. Remarks by G Rollo, O.C. "The work done by this man was
of great value to me". Remarks by F.C. Stanley, Brigadier General commanding 89th
Infantry Brigade "A fine performance worthy of all praise". The 9th April 1917,
Easter Monday, was the attack on the Hindenburg Line, a front of 18 miles including Vimy
Ridge. The 19th Battalion was at Henin & St Martin sur Cojeul, S.E of Arras. Harold
died 4th February 1940 of Pneumonia in Preston Royal Infirmary For a larger picture just click on the
