Mary Sewell 1797-1884

Author and mother of Anna Sewell who wrote Black Beauty

as painted by Edward Penston

Mary Sewell's crippled daughter, Anna Sewell, wrote the children's classic Black Beauty. The Sewells were Quakers and in the 1820s they lived in Stoke Newington, Middlesex, near London. At that time the area was renowned as a centre for both writers and non-conformists. There was a thriving Quaker community.
