This article was published in the March 2000 edition of Soul Search, the journal of The Sole Society. 

On the 1881 British Census I have found two Sauls born in Germany who could be uncles of my grandfather Martin Saul who migrated to Australia in 1880. Grandfather visited cousins in England on his way to Australia.

The first is Frederick Saul, born c1841 from Hesse Cassel, a baker, and his wife Sophia, born c1841 in St. Giles, Middlesex. The two daughters are Sophia born c1857 and Elizabeth born c1860, both in Middlesex. Living with them was a cousin George Fennell aged 4, born in St. Lukes. The dwelling address was 8 Aylesbury St., Newington, Surrey.

The second family is William Saul born c1836 in Germany, a baker, and his wife Fredericka Saul born c1838 in Germany. Their daughter was Minnie Saul born c1868, and son, Frederick Saul born c1877 both in London. There was a servant Catherine Rew aged 21 from Germany, and an assistant Baker, Anthony Hill, 19, born in Prussia.

If any of these 3 girls and 1 boy survived to have children I wonder if those descendants are still living in England? If so, it could be the link I am looking for to connect the English, German and Australian branches of my particular Sauls. At present we seem to be isolated from the majority of Sauls.
