Veteran Canadian actor, Paul Soles is coming to Stratford. The veteran Canadian actor and TV personality has agreed to take on the role of Shylock in the Stratford Festival 2001 production of The Merchant of Venice.
Festival artistic director Richard Monette, who is directing the production, welcomed Soles to the Festival company yesterday and thanked him for agreeing to step into the role after the death of actor Al Waxman, who had been slated to play the role. Waxman died after complications following heart surgery on January 17th. Rehearsals for the play begin in the coming weeks and the production opens May 28th.
Soles, well-known across Canada for his work in theatre, film and television, began his career in TV news and current affairs, and is remembered as the host of CBC's long-running Take Thirty opposite co-hosts Anna Cameron, Adrienne Clarkson, Mary Lou Finlay and Hana Gartner, and for shows such as This Is the Law, Wayne and Shuster and Beyond Reason.
Yet throughout his wide-ranging career, Soles has played a variety of stage roles, including a nine-month run with the world premiere of the musical Ragtime, the lead role of Nat in I'm Not Rappaport, Mr Dussel in The Diary of Anne Frank (with Eli Wallach and Anne Jackson) and the Doctor and other roles in Maebeth (on Broadway with Glenda Jackson and Christopher Plummer).
Soles' film credits include The Lotus Eaters, Gunrunner, Family Reunion, Ticket to Heaven and Falling Over Backwards, for which he received a Genie nomination for best supporting actor. He's featured in the forthcoming Paramount movie The Score, directed by Frank Oz, with Edward Norton, Robert DeNiro and Marlon Brando
