William Sewell 1847-1915

William Sewell is the great great grandfather of Tony Sewell, Bishops Stortford, Hertfordshire. William was born in 1847 the son of a sailing ship master. At the tender age of 14 years he went to sea with his father and travelled the world eventually progressing the ranks until he also became master of ships sailing out of Littlehampton.

In 1877 he retired from the sea and became Harbour Master of Littlehampton a job which he held for 38 years until his death in 1915. The picture below was taken in 1887 and shows him on the far left, next to the flag, en bateau with the River Arun Commissioners.
