Bill Sole the Baker

By Fred Sole

This article was originally published in the March 1999 edition of Soul Search, the journal of The Sole Society.

Thomas William Sole ‑ he was always known as Bill ‑ became a baker and lived in at his employment in March, Cambridgeshire.

There he met his employer's housemaid Edith May Overall, the eldest daughter of John (deceased) and Annie Maria Overall of Whittlesey, Cambridgeshire. Thomas and Edith were married at the Baptist Chapel, Whittlesey and went to live at Eastrea near Whittlesey, where Thomas had found new employment.

A son Alfred was born in 1924 but, always in failing health, he died in 1926. Before the second son Frederick Thomas William (me) was born in June 1927, Thomas Wiliam's health finally rejected the rigours of a country baker's life and he died in January 1927.

So you see, I never knew my father, although of course I was told a great deal about him, and I was not able to learn anything from him about his predecessors. Mother, too, had comparatively little time to find out about them so she could not help much
