This is a query from John Solly which there wasn’t room to include in the August Edition of Soul Search.  Bob Solly the Solly research co-ordinator had information on the family going back to the early 1700s which showed that John’s ancestors were prominent people in Sandwich and included two Mayors.

Elected mayor in December 1747 (extract from General Advertiser) 251 votes to Mr Solomon Ferrier 79 votes

17 Mar 1745:

"Whereas the Warehouse near the Custom-house (in which was secured a considerable quantity of brandy and wine under the King's locks) was on or before the tenth day of February last broke open and a great quantity of brandy stolen and taken away; for the better discovering and bringing to justice the person or persons concerned in the fact aforesaid, the Hon. Commissioners of his Majesty's Customs do hereby offer a reward of fifty pounds to any person or persons who shall make such discovery; to be paid on conviction of one or more of the offender or offenders." Gentleman and Mayor of Sandwich 1792. Bought and owned Neville Fleet, KEN, Ash. This remained in the family until 1808. Unmarried

Joseph was unmarried according to Ridlon. He says " William Henry Solly, son of Richard Solly married Christian Wickes, dau of ... Wickes. Born 1714, died 1770, Mayor of Sandwich 1737-1747. Issue James born 1745, died 1749; William Henry born 1747 died 1764, unm; Joseph born 1751, died 1803 unm. He had a natural son who took the name Solly, married and had a large family.” If he refers to Joseph, then George is illegitimate.

Property in the Will: Farm House at Worth, land at Woodnesborough and at Fleet, £220. Other property listed included Farm House at Fleet, 20 other properties total £581.
