SOLE Co-ordinator's Report December 2003

By Maureen Storey

In this journal we welcome new member Cynthia Betteridge whose grandmother Kate Mary Soul was born in Ampney Crucis, GLS, in 1897. In the two years since she began her research Cynthia has traced her family back to Edward Sole and Elizabeth Walters who married in Burford, OXF, in 1787. Our database took the family back a further generation since it included Edward’s baptism in Yanworth, GLS in 1755 – he was the son of William Soul and Mary Sansom. At his marriage to Mary at Cirencester in 1749, William was recorded as being ‘of Yanworth’ but the earliest Soul entry in the parish register is the baptism of his daughter Mary in 1750. William is the head of our largest Gloucestershire family and his baptism is keenly sought by several of our members.

Suzanne Blake from Shepparton, Victoria, Australia, is researching the family of her grandmother Winifred Stagg (nee Sole). Winifred, the youngest child of Samuel and Harriet (nee Roche) was born in Poplar, MDX, in 1892. At the head of Suzanne’s family tree are John and Elizabeth Sole whose nine children were born in West Ham, ESS, between about 1824 and 1845. According to the 1851 census, John was born in Enfield, MDX, in about 1790 which suggests he was the son of the John and Elizabeth Sole who had nine children baptized in Enfield between 1794 and 1808, but his baptism isn’t recorded in the Enfield registers.

As part of his research into his Warren family history James Yeowell has been looking at the links between his family and the other families in Ickleton, CAM. He wrote to ask if we knew whether Alice Mary Soole who married Samuel Gamgee in 1926 was part of the Ickleton family and if so where she fitted. An exchange of information with James has proved mutually beneficial as he has given us some new data on the married Soole women.

I’d like to thank all members, especially David Taylor, who have sent corrections/updates for the CD. If you have anything to add or have spotted any errors, however minor, please let me know. We’d also welcome suggestions for other items to include in the next edition.
