SOLLEY Co-ordinator's Report April 2008
By Bob Solly
We have had a number of enquiries over the last few months, a
summary is shown below. Our records help with some answers, but if anyone has
any further information please let me know.

I've joined the society but not heard anything since. I am trying to trace my
Solly family who originally came from Lewisham. My Great Grandad was one Edward
Solly who registered my grandfather, John, dob as 27.09.1892
Family folklore is that Edward had 6 children by 1st wife then a further 6 with
his second. My Grandfather also had half brothers blvd name of Harper who came
from Highgate.
Do you know anyone who has a similar background?
Reply:
I note that you are related to Edward Solly and then John Solly. I have a copy
of the GRO births and I cannot find him. I am sure you have the certificate so
maybe you can check – the GRO is not always correct.
I am sorry we don’t have any more information about your family. If you can find
more about Edward and his dob we may be able to find the other relatives.

Richard Kent, my cousin, passed me your interesting letter which included Henry
Solly (he died before I was born) and my grandmother Laura Field.
I am the Solley co-ordinator to the Sole Society which is a genealogy society
researching four distinct groups of names, which include Solly.
I suggest you look at the information there first and this could help
considerably; you may like to consider joining as the CD provided gives a
tremendous amount of information.
I am attaching a family record file of our own family (which includes Richard
and Daisy). Let me know if you can use a GEDCOM file
Daisy Kent (nee Solly) was my father’s sister. Their parents were as you noted.
However, I do not have a clear link back to a Thomas Solly. You will see that
Henry’s father was Frederick Walter Solly and his father was Frederick Solly. In
turn his father was Stephen which was also the name of his father.
I have been rather stuck there, as we have a record of a number of Stephen in
and around Ash, Kent (near Canterbury) where the name originated.
Perhaps you could send me more information about Thomas so I can have a look at
it.
I note you are in New Zealand where there is a strong Solly representation which
stems from the first Stephen Solly (b 1751). Another son William had a family
which included Edward Solly. He emigrated to New Zealand and arrived in
Lyttleton on 1 March 1851.

Dear Claire
I understand you are interested in the Soll(e)y name.
We have a great number of records from Parish, GRO and military as well as from
our own sources of Soll(e)y names. If you let me have a few details of your
family, we will try and help your further research.
To Lawrence Bridger
I understand you are interested in the Soll(e)y name. I am the co-ordinator and
if you send me a few details of your interest, I will see if we can help further
from our extensive records from the GRO, Parish and military sources as well as
our own personal resources.
From Craig Little
I am a descendant of William Solly and Elizabeth Sharp. Their son William Solly
married Sarah Ann Hopkins
Their son John Solly married Julia Warner their son Frederick Solly
Florence Solly(my grandmother). I don’t have a lot on the family so any help
would be welcomed. Ican add my details if anyone needs them.
Reply
With apologies for not replying sooner, we do have William Solly and Elizabeth
Sharpe on our records and his son William marrying Sarah – unfortunately we have
nothing after the daughter Elizabeth, so any information to add to that already
sent would be most useful. In the meantime I am attaching a descendant chart
from which you will see that we have common ancestors.

Subject: Aaron Ambrose Solly
I am a direct descendent of Aaron Ambrose Solly, b. abt 1826. No one I have
found to date can confirm his birth date. He migrated to Australia in about
1850/53. Do you have any info on him?? He worked with the South Australian
Railways and was killed by a shunting train on 28 Jun 1818. It is thought he had
a brother Robert and Reuben who also came to Australia.
