SAUL Reunion in Brisbane, Australia

A mini SAUL reunion was held at Acacia Ridge in Brisbane on the June long weekend 1992 for the descendants of Arthur Edward SAUL and Edith Hannah Lavina (nee Roberts). Arthur was the tenth child in a family of twelve born to Jeremiah and Ann (nee Wood). Jeremiah known as Jerry was baptised in Whitehaven, in the old county of Cumberland in 1831, son of John and Mary Ann (Parkin) SAUL, and one of eleven children.

The family stories passed down tell of Jeremiah coming to Australia as a lad aged 16 in 1846 by either working his passage or travelling as a unnamed steerage passenger. Jeremiah would have landed in Sydney and eventually worked his way to the far North Coast of New South Wales where he married in 1853. Jeremiah was a Cedar Cutter all his life and for a time, some of his sons also followed this profession. Jeremiah died aged 57 in December 1887.

Arthur SAUL was born 24 April 1877 at South Gundurimba on the outskirts of Lismore, New South Wales. Marrying in 1899, Arthur and his wife Edith has a family of ten children. There is only one surviving child, my father Douglas (Doug) Albert SAUL.

Since we cousins had drifted apart, it was thought a good idea to have one day to get together. Max and Melita WATT and myself put our heads together and organised the food, Max loaning his home for the occasion. I did a display of about 65 A3 sheets of information and photos.

We had about 80 people attending which was not the full roll call. These ranged from Doug, son of Arthur, down to greatgreat‑grandchildren. The day produced perfect weather in the mid‑twenties, and my father got up and told a few stories of his youth, as did some of the older cousins who had the honour of knowing their grandfather Arthur, unlike us younger ones.

Everyone had such a good time, it was decided to hold another one in the Lismore area in 1993, when we hope all descendants of Jeremiah and Ann SAUL will attend and also the descendants of any of Jeremiah's sisters or brothers. I will produce a small explanatory booklet.

So, is anyone out there descended from John and Mary Ann (Parkins) SAUL's children, namely Hannah (1818), John (1820), Sarah (1822), Mary (1823), Ann (1825, married DOBSON), Joseph (1827), Rebecca (1829), Joshua (1834‑1839), Jane (1836), Elizabeth (1838), and Jeremiah SAUL (1831‑1887) and his descendants John Thomas SAUL (1854‑1940, married Martha NIPPERESS), Margaret Ann SAUL (1856‑1927, married William HOSKINS), Joseph SAUL (1857‑1941, married (1) Anne LOFTS, (2) Rebecca ANDERSON (nee COURTNEY)), William SAUL (1859‑1917?), Joshua SAUL (19601943, married Isabella Catherine BEH), Charles SAUL (1862‑1916 married Sarah MASLEN), Sarah SAUL (1864‑1916, married James MASLEN), Mary Jane SAUL (1866‑1866), Esther SAUL (18681917, married George MASLEN), Arthur Edward SAUL (1877‑1935, married Edith Hannah Lavina ROBERTS), Rebecca Jane SAUL (1879‑1955, married Frank FLETCHER), Herbert Jeremiah SAUL (1881‑1944, married Mabel ALLARD).

I am seeking family history, photos and descendants. If you can help, please contact Glenda Manwaring, 11 Orana Street, Kingston, Queensland, 4114.
