SOLLEY Co-ordinator's Report December 2005

By Bob Solly

In the last issue of Soul Search, Lynne Burlingham wrote a very interesting article about George Solley which gave a good illustration for price comparisons with the present day.  I notice that Georgeís funeral in 1899 cost £16. Sadly I recently had to arrange my fatherís funeral, which, though a simple occasion, cost some £2,600.

Looked at the site more today. My Solley was listed as Folley and Lolley. My line thru my mother goes back to William who m Elizabeth Reader. William was b at Ramsgate, Elizabeth b Sheerness.

It's the same line as Sheila Jackson's researching. I have the article Keith Solley of Qld wrote, we may end up connected to it, as names go they are repetitive.

Please would it be possible for you to forward this e-mail to the  George Solly who I see from the Internet wrote a little article about his Mundon connection for your August 2001 journal?

Although I am not myself a Solly descendant, I have some info and a few Edwardian photos which might interest him.  In 1902, my grandmother's sister married the widowed (Thomas) Herbert Solly who had been born at Mundon in September 1865. She then lived at Mundon Hall with him and his sons until the farm was sold in the late 1920s.

I have also tracked more info relating to the people in George's article itself - partly because I am a direct descendant of one of them.

Oddly, I have a brother-in-law who is a member of your society....but that is completely separate, as he is a Sewell!

From David Godfrey-Smith of Tasmania, Australia

I found your contact information on the Sole Society website. I am researching the ancestors of Ellen Solly b.1836 in Paris, France and d.1893 in Australia. She was my GGgrandmother. My notes on her are as follows:

Ellen Solly was born in Paris, France and spoke French before she spoke English.  It is not clear whether her parents were French, but she certainly had many cousins in England.  She left France at an early age and lived with relatives in England.  Her father was an architect but died young and her mother remarried.

Does this give you enough clues as to determine whether it would be worth my while to join the Society and access some of the records?

From Peter Scott 9 October 2005

I have been trying to work back from Isaac Solly who married Rebecca Peake in 1775 in St Laurence Thanet for some time and may finally have found his birth. If correct this leads back to a George Solly and I can find him on the excellent Society CD - ref KTO715. This lists his parents as Thomas Solly and Elizabeth Holt married 27/1/1704 in Ash.

However there does not appear to be anything more on the CD re Thomas (unless I am missing it !!!). The notes suggest that there may be more details not included on the CD hence the email.

Any information would be most appreciated.

I'm a member of the Sole Soc. Recently on a few days hols in Kent I was researching my maiden name family tree of WRAITH . Info from parish records lead to Ash. No WRAITHS but we found loads of Sollys & Solleys in the parish church yard. Also one in a church, St.Peters , in Sandwich . We took photos of the stones in case they werenít recorded . Are you interested in them ? I may send the story of finding them to the magazine.

From Lynne Burlingham 4 September

Further to my email to you of 18 August 2005, I have attached a transcription of the Will of Crawford Smith, made 21 September 1812, and proved 19th January 1814. It shows that although his wife's maiden name was Agen and that they had a daughter Elizabeth, Elizabeth was married to a Thomas Prickett, NOT Thomas Solley (my 3xgreat-grandfather). I have found the marriage of Crawford Smith to Elizabeth Agen (1766) and the Christening of several of their children including Elizabeth (8 March 1775), as well as the marriage of Elizabeth Smith to Thomas Prickett on 5 October 1795 at Alkham, Kent  in the IGI via the Family Search web site. I suggest that the Solley records you hold be amended accordingly.
