SOLE (Kent) Co-ordinator's Report - November 1996

By Bob Sheldon

We have been able to establish further connections between members that we are fairly sure about. Sue Sutton (nee Sole) born at Margate, Kent and now living in New Zealand, is the great-great-great-great-granddaughter of James Sole born 1796 in Monkton, Kent. She is therefore confirmed as a cousin of Sarah Knight and myself.

Sarah has also established a connection between herself and Derek Sole, born at Rickmansworth, and now living in Risca, Gwent. They share the same great-greatgrandfather Alfred who was born in Chislet, Kent in 1832, the son of the above James Sole born 1796.

We have also helped new Australian member Aileen Fisher to identify three generations of her Kent SOLE ancestors who lived in the Herne area prior to her grandfather emigrating around mid-1800s. Unfortunately we have not yet been able to connect her to any other of the Kent lines.

With Sarah's help, I have continued to research the Census returns for Thanet at the PRO in London. We have now completed this task and will move on to other areas of Kent as time permits.

I have also started a systematic search of parish records for East Kent at the Canterbury Cathedral archives. I regret that I do not live closer to Canterbury but I hope to pay regular visits to continue this research to supplement the data already obtained from the IGI.

I have been in contact with Tim Soles who has now given the Society a presence on the Internet. This is a rapidly growing new means of quick communication world-wide and which we hope will enable the Society to reach ever more family history researchers of the SOLEs and all variations of the name. There is already a vast amount of genealogical correspondence on the Internet which Tim and I are searching regularly for potential contacts.

Finally I should like to thank Society member Philip Lloyd for sending me - in reply to my request in the March 1996 Journal - an interesting booklet about the Countess of Huntingdon's Connexion, which was a branch of the Methodists established by the Countess during the l8th century. She established chapels in many places, one of which was in Margate, Kent. It was this congregation that appealed to one of the SOLEs there and lead to my previous request for information.
