SOLE Co-ordinator's Report August 2003
By Maureen Storey
In this journal we welcome new member Amanda Wallis. Amanda’s Grandfather Sidney William Sole was born in Gt Rollwright, OXF, in Jun 1913 and was the fourth of the seven children of Thomas Sole and Winifred Pulham. Sidney’s family has been traced back to William Soul and Mary Sansom who married in Cirencester, GLS, in 1749. Amanda is keen to learn more about her grandfather and his immediate family, as he died when she was only three and she has no memories of him.
Mark Murphy is researching the family of Benjamin Soles, who was born in either Schoharie or Columbia County, New York, between 1777 and 1782. He is known to have spent some time in Canada (at least three of his children were born there) but according to the 1855 census he was back in the USA by the mid-1840s. Mark is looking for Benjamin’s birth and also his marriage. His wife’s name is given as Polly in the census but appears on other documents as Mary and Maria.
Kathleen Schwartzman wrote to tell us of a useful website she had found. Kathleen is the granddaughter of Myrtle A Soales of Madison County, Indiana and she is researching Myrtle’s family who are believed to have settled in Indiana in the mid 1800s. Kathleen has been looking at the family’s involvement in the American Civil War and has found the website http://civilwarindiana.com very useful for locating Civil War soldiers.
Internet searches for data on his grandfather’s family led Tony Hopewell to our site. Tony’s grandfather Arthur Soles was born in Pembroke in 1892. When he contacted us Tony had traced the family from Pembroke back to Buckminster, LEI, and we were able to extend his family back further to James and Mary Soles, who lived in Colsterworth, LIN, in the early 1800s. Tony told us that the reason we’d been unable to find a record of the death of Arthur Soles was that after his marriage he had changed his name to Bradley.
Finally, after finding Philip Lloyd’s article (Soul Search, July 1993) about his research into the Cornish Sholl families on the website, Marcella Sholl contacted us offering some information about the Brazilian Sholls. Marcella has been put in touch with Philip and hopefully will be able to add some data to his one-name study. n
