SOLE Co-ordinator's Report May 2006

by Maureen Storey

Our Sole membership continues to grow and in this journal we welcome three new members: Denise el-Wahabi, Heather Griffiths, and Mary Betz.

Denise had traced her family back to James Sole and Elizabeth Kidd, who married in Islington, MDX, in 1850. The Society's records show that James was the son of James Sole (baptised 1801 Hackney) and Hannah Barnard, and the grandson of William Sole and Dinah Woodland, who married in Hackney in 1787. We believe William was born in Therfield, HRT.

Heather was seeking information on the family of her great grandmother Martha Ann Sole. Martha was born in Reidsdale, near Major's Creek, New South Wales, in 1868 and was the oldest child of Daniel Sole (b Kelshall, HRT, 1832) and Mary Ann Fensom. Daniel and his brother Edward emigrated to Australia in 1856 aboard the Sultana.

Mary is another member of the Kelshall family. Mary's grandmother Mary Ann Sole was born in 1872, Ashwell, HRT, where her father George worked at Hare Park Farm. Mary Ann married first George Tillier (or Tilyer) and then Henry Arthur Horatio Nelson. Mary Ann and Henry lived in Cambridge from about 1914 until his death in 1942. Mary Ann died in 1948/49.

Information from the Southwark 1851 census has added another branch to the Kelshall tree. Before we learned of this census entry, it was thought that the William Sole, son of Edward and Sarah, who was baptised in Steeple Morden, CAM, in 1792, was probably the William Sowell who married Susan Moule in Sandon, HRT in 1815 and was still living in the area in 1832. However, the 1851 census records William, aged 55, b Steeple Morden, CAM, living with his wife Mary Ann (nee Edden) and their two youngest children in Skin Market, Southwark. The age here doesn't quite correlate with a 1792 baptism, but such discrepancies in census ages are not uncommon and it seems almost certain that this William is the son of Edward and Sarah. Most of William's descendants were still to be found in south London well into the twentieth century. This branch of the Kelshall family generally uses the Sowle variant of the name.

The Sole Society Discussion Forum is attracting queries from some non-members: Sally is looking for information about the family of her grandmother, Henrietta Sole, who was born in Holborn in 1898. She has been unable to find them on the 1901 census and wonders if anyone can help; another forum member is looking for information on Ralph Soles, whose sons Clarence and Gustav were born in Minnesota in 1913 and 1916. Ralph left the family in about 1930 and nothing more was heard from him.
